Dealing with Your Professional Back Up Support: There is Power in Your Network

There is a running joke between the Naveen Jindal School of Management, UT Dallas technical support team and me. As a new professor, I request and rely on their support quite a bit. And, good naturedly, they show up to correct whatever technical errors I’ve created.

However, this back up refers to professionals you can ask for help and support. For example, how can I talk about negotiating like a lawyer when I haven’t practiced law in almost twenty years?

Thankfully, my former law partner and dear friend, Wendel Withrow agreed to speak to two of my classes and share his wisdom as an attorney. The students loved asking Wendel questions, hearing of his client and trial experience, and appreciated the amount of preparation and information he provided.

On the next day, Tori Levine shared her experiences as a products liability and corporate attorney. Now a partner at Spencer Fane LLP, Tori and I practiced together at our first firm Baker, Mills, and Glast which became Geary, Glast, and Middleton many years ago. The students loved her stories and how she related negotiating like an attorney to real life.

These legal rock stars provided current insight into a valuable negotiation topic. Tapping into their expert support enriched the students’ education in a way I couldn’t on my own.

❓Who do you ask for professional support?
❓What do you do to stay connected with your network?
❓How do people from your past provide support in your present?

By the way, people ask me for legal recommendations. Without hesitation, I’d suggest you reach out to Wendel Withrow and Tori Levine. If they can’t help you, they will refer you to someone who can.

Go Negotiate!
